But that wasn’t always who I am. I’ve come a very long way!

THE BEGINNING

If you had met me as a kid or teenager, fitness would have been the last thing you’d associate with me. I hated gym class. I was always the one finishing last, struggling through the mile, wishing I could disappear. Movement didn’t feel empowering back then. It felt uncomfortable and intimidating.

Growing up in a single-parent household, my mom did everything. She worked full time, kept the house running, and did her best to put healthy meals on the table. But what I really remember is the constant craving for sweets. It felt relentless. From a young age, I’d throw away most of my packed lunch and only eat the snack. Sugar felt like comfort. Control. Relief.

As I got older, I became painfully aware of my mom’s weight and her mood. I noticed patterns. I made assumptions. And in my teenage mind, I connected dots that may or may not have belonged together. I decided that being overweight must mean being unhappy. And I promised myself I would never let that happen to me.

I didn't know anything about nutrition, calories, or exercise. I only knew that the opposite of overweight was skinny.

I went looking for answers in the only place I knew how. The internet. Dial up AOL and all. What I found was dangerous. I stumbled onto blogs glorifying disordered eating. I learned just enough to be harmful. And while I never fully crossed certain lines, I hovered close enough to understand how easy it is to fall into patterns that disconnect you from your body instead of supporting it.

THE TURNING POINT

Fast forward a few years, and my life took a turn I never saw coming. In my early twenties, I was engaged to my best friend. We lived together. Worked together. Did everything together. I thought I was stepping into my forever.

One night, he fell asleep at a friend’s house and never woke up.

My world completely collapsed.

In the weeks that followed, my body started to unravel too. I developed severe hives. Then swelling. My face would distort so badly that I didn’t recognize myself in the mirror. The pain was constant. Doctors couldn’t help. Medications didn’t work. I was exhausted, grieving, and desperate.

I started drinking too much. I lost hope. I honestly didn’t care if I kept going.

FINDING STRENGTH

Out of pure survival mode, I went searching for anything that might help. I lived near a gym, so I joined. I didn’t have a plan. I didn’t know what I was doing. I just walked on the treadmill because it felt safe.

And slowly, something shifted.

Fitness didn't save my life because it made me look different. It saved my life because it gave me an outlet.

As I began putting physical stress on my body in a healthy way, the emotional stress started to ease. The hives lessened. The swelling slowly faded. Over time, my body calmed down. My mind did too.

Fitness became the first thing that made me feel strong again—mentally, emotionally, and physically. That’s where my journey truly began.

THE BIRTH OF GRO-FIT

As I got stronger, I wanted to help other women feel that same sense of empowerment. But when I asked friends to come to the gym with me, they all said the same things.

“I need to lose weight first.”

“I don’t belong in that kind of gym.”

“I’m too out of shape.”

I recognized that fear immediately because I had lived it.

So I asked a different question: What if the gym came to them?

That idea became Gro-Fit.

I started offering in-home training. No intimidation. No judgment. Just support, education, and confidence building. My goal was never to make women dependent on me. It was to teach them how to move, why it mattered, and how to trust their bodies again.

Over the last two decades, I’ve worked with women who felt stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from themselves. Women who were tired of starting over. Women who wanted real guidance and real accountability, not another generic plan.
