Integrating Keto into our family meals has been a challenge at times. The hardest part, by far, is changing my personal mindset from that of a bodybuilder diet. But so far, I am liking it! Losing the winter squishy (10lbs) just in time for summer has made the transition totally worth it.

However, I don’t think a strict Keto diet is sustainable for busy moms, or anyone constantly on the go, but there are some obvious highlights of the Keto lifestyle that anyone can implement and get results.

The foundation of the Keto diet is to redirect your body so it gets energy from fat rather than carbohydrates. This is achieved by eliminating all carbs from your diet. If, for one reason or another, you aren’t able or ready to cut out all carbs there are some changes you can make that will help you on your journey.

Cut Out All Sugar

Yes, it’s difficult, but sugar is, in some cases, enemy number one for those looking to lose weight. If you cut out sugar you’ll see the pounds melt away. You’ll want to limit your fruit consumption as well as they can be high in sugar. Stick to berries and citrus if you need a fruity fix.

Eliminate Processed Carbs

No matter how much “whole wheat” it contains, it’s not enough to balance out the bad. Also known as refined carbs, these products have been stripped of almost all fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are also digested quickly and have a high glycemic index. Processed carbs are the true definition of empty calories.

Reduce Carbs In General

Many studies have shown that low-carb diets can help you lose weight and control diabetes and other conditions. If you aren’t going “full Keto” stick to complex carbohydrates like high-fiber fruits and veggies, beans, and quinoa. Replace the omitted carbs with lots of protein and fiber to keep you full and healthy.

Replace Carbs With Healthy Fats

This is the most important tip when you are on a low-carb diet. When you aren’t eating carbs you need to provide your body with a new fuel source or your body will go into starvation mode. Not to mention HANGRY! Contrary to what you might have been taught in school, not all fat is bad. In fact, healthy fats are all the rage right now. It might feel weird to pick up a full-fat item but as long as it’s the good kind you’re free to indulge! Healthy fats are found in avocados, olive oil, nuts, MCT Oil, and fish. Look for heart-healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and avoid saturated fats, like those found in junk food, at all costs.
